Application example 2

Spilling Gasexpander and CHP unit

Spilling installed a 6-cylinder gas expander with a medium voltage generator parallel to the gas transfer station in the utilities works of a North German city with approx. 200,000 inhabitants. For pre-heating the natural gas before single stage expansion a CHP was installed

The exhaust heat from the CHP is supplied to the heat exchangers of the expansion plant over a local heating system. Result: A particularly high electricity yield by linking the expansion motor and the CHP – in addition to the distinct environmental relief. Furthermore, compared to purchasing electricity externally, the companies achieved a considerable cost saving with an efficiency factor of approx. 85% due to the highly efficient conversion of primary energy into electricity.

Benefits for the customer

  • Cost saving by reduction of electricity purchase
  • Improved CO2 balance due to highly efficient plant technology
  • Compensation for CHP electricity feed in through combined installation of the gas expansion plant with CHP block-units
