Spilling gas expansion engines are used in natural gas transfer stations by energy providers and industry. The design is driven by consideration of the respective gas pressure ratios and the gas reference characteristics. The modular concept of Spilling permits the individual configuration of cylinder number and pressure staging, making them optimally adaptable for any gas pressure regulator station requirement.

The engines can be built with single, double or multi-stage expansion, according to the expansion pressure ratio between inlet and discharge pressures. Engines with regulated extraction are available for multi-stage plants. Gas expansion plants exploit the pressure difference between the natural gas pipeline and the distribution networks or power-consuming machines for generating mechanical or electrical energy.
